Jack and Jill is a 2011 comedy film directed by Dennis Dugan and written by Steve Koren and Adam Sandler, who also stars in dual roles as both Jack and Jill Sadelstein – fraternal twins who are complete opposites in personality, yet equally important to the story’s message of love, acceptance, and family, which revolves around them.
Jack Sadelstein is the main character, a successful advertising executive in Los Angeles, living with his caring wife, Erin, and their two kids. He is full of confidence, very much a businessman, and likes things organized, and thrives in structures. Everything is in order in his, quite chaotic, life, until Thanksgiving comes around, and his twin sister, Jill, comes over from the Bronx.
Jill is the opposite of Jack, as she is extravagant, very emotional, and extremely clingy. Although they used to share a very strong bond, Jack and Jill have grown apart over the years. Jill stays for what is supposed to be a few days, yet for Jack, absolutely opposite to what Jill wants, is a source of great stress, as his peace is disrupted by her outrageous behavior and overpowering character.
Nearing the end of the anticipated visit, Jack realizes that his patience is very quickly wearing thin. Jack is particularly sensitive to Jill’s New York accent and her tendency to talk incessantly, which adds to the discomfort of already awkward situations that arise on family outings and social events.
Jack’s perspective suddenly shifts, and he is now a part of a significant advertising campaign that has him as the main person responsible to win a call to the famed actor, Al Pacino, to appear in a TV commercial of Dunkin’ Donuts, which he has to act a “fictional” version of himself. Further, Pacino has a very positive and encouraging first impression of Jill at a basketball game.
Jack thought that Pacino’s infatuation was going to end, and has proven him to be very wrong, because he is certain that he has a ticket to gain the much needed endorsement he has which is very unfortunate for him, because he, Jill, was bound to be within his company for much longer. Jack’s thoughts on his confrontation with Jill was meant for the very different scenario. He thought she was in Los Angeles for mere entertainment, when in fact, she was looking for something much more, which is appreciation, friendship and family.
The story progresses as Jill’s honesty and her warm heart move even Erin and the children with her sunny disposition. On the other hand, the children with her sunny disposition.
