The Maid

Synopsis

The Maid is a chilean drama film released in 2009 and centers around a devoted domestic worker, Raquel, and her plight after serving the same family for twenty three years. Over the years, she has become more than a mere employee for the Valdes family. Raquel has been enmeshed into the family, and shares a warm, nurturing bond with their son Lucas.

On the surface, one may assume Raquel is happy and satisfied with her life. However, her internal reality is plagued with emotions, routines, and a lack of understanding her sense of self. With age, she has become more aware of her growing health issues. In particular, the constant dizziness she encounters when she is exposed cleaning materials. Raquel’s employer, Pilar, notices this and wishes to help her by lightening her burden, getting her more help.

Pilar’s concern for Raquel’s health prompts her to seek help for Raquel. However, Raquel is not able to see the extra help as a positive addition. To her, it is nothing more than a threat.

The fear of being replaced and rendered obsolete drives Raquel to Extermination to ward off other maid’s attempts to encroach upon her position. Being the only maid in the household for an extended period has allowed Raquel to construct an internalized narrative where her ‘role’ can be elevated like an attache doll. The subtler means of competition she deploys to thwart newcomers could be termed passive proxy. The more annoying antics are framed as an active attempt to irritate the other maids.

The only thing surpassing the equilibrium balance as posited in the time value of emotion is Raquel. Her internal angst comes to the fore in thresholds of time as she loses grip over the very constitutional fabric of identity.

The plot twist, however, is wrought by the countryside, and the newest maid of the household, Lucy. The nuanced subjects of her empathy however remain the cause of her smile, strong spirit and gentle demeanor. They provide the only critical mass needed to buffer cold walls and indifference, allowing in the profound warmth and acceptance of Lucy’s character. Softer she became. Light was allowed to penetrate the impermeable walls of the emotional fortress she has been in for so long.

Throughout the story, Raquel experiences a quiet, yet powerful transformation, as she begins to appreciate friendship, the importance of self-respect, and understanding that she is more than a mere maid. The friendship that is shared between the two is the key to unlocking Raquel’s emotional renewal.

The film’s effectiveness lies not only in the delicate focus on the subject of a woman’s inner life, but also in the consideration of the woman’s life with honesty, sympathy, and gentle comedy.

Direction and Writing

With a thoughtful grasp on the intricacies of everyday life and the complex emotions they can conceal, Sebastián Silva, who directed the film, also wrote it with the help of Pedro Peirano. It is evident that the film is a culmination of extensive research, as the conversations appear to flow effortlessly and the speed is measured. Silva’s choice to let the audience in on Raquel’s life through quiet, mundane moments, instead of overtly theatrical actions, is commendable as it provided authenticity.

There is no blame placed in the direction, nor is Raquel a knight in shining armor or a wicked witch, but rather a multifaceted individual forged by decades of dogmatism, devotion, and concealed seclusion. Such writing brilliantly captures the emotional range of what it means to be a domestic servant without ever stereotyping or resorting to clichés.

Themes

The Maid is rife with powerful, relatable themes:

Loyalty and Identity: As an integral part of the family, Raquel has fully pledged herself to. Identity is a social construct that is a product of a self-imposed role. When that role is challenged, it is not just the body that is questioned—meaning, it initiates a cascade of ruptures and disjunctions.

Change and Resistance: The documentary highlights the rather discomforting change everyone en masse faces when an individual’s position is somehow jeopardized or called into question. Raquel’s resistance is a product of her fear, not a diabolical intent.

Human Connection: The underlying story surrounds the relationship built between Raquel and Lucy. Through the friendship, Raquel has a canvas to rearticulate her self-image.

Belonging: Raquel’s devotion and hard work has seemingly swallowed her life. The film delicately addresses the question of what it means to belong, and how we can lose ourselves in our work.

Even ordinary lives, with purposeful steering, fine acting, and a well written script, can easily prove to contain an extraordinary depth. The Maid, is a testament to this observation.
