Daddy’s Home

Synopsis

Daddy’s Home is a 2015 American family comedy film that looks at modern blended families. The film is about Brad Whitaker trying to bond with his wife Sara’s kids from a previous marriage. Brad is a radio executive and is kind-hearted and mild-mannered. Though it is difficult to connect with the kids, he works hard to earn their love and appreciation.

Just as he starts improving his relationship with the kids, the family encounters a surprise visit from the kids’ biological father, Dusty Mayron. Unlike Brad, Dusty is rough, adventurous and charismatic. He rides motorcycles, speaks with untamed confidence and easily wins over the kids with his bold banter.

The moment Dusty steps foot inside the house, a quiet, strong competition starts. Structure and discipline dominate Dusty’s parenting. He is a calm, well-mannered person, but these characteristics wither in comparison to Dusty’s wild and reckless persona. Dusty showers the kids with gifts and captivates their imagination with his extraordinary tales, capturing their love and adoration.

Their mount of “friendly” rivalry equally claims both men aim to win over the key father figures in the children’s lives. What follows is an attempt at humor in which each one tries to win over the children’s attention. In the aftermath of the children’s attention, both men wish to earn the favor of Sara.

Throughout the film, in a bid to catch up with Dusty, Brad tries to keep up with Brad’s deeds. While Brad is still in the process of improving his Scooby Doo likeliness, he goes as far as attempting a motorcycle ride at which point the use of the word ‘mature’ becomes questionable. As every dad needs a dose of InstaGlory, Dusty, brad’s fatherly cousin, finds the act of successfully charming the children, winning, a piece of cake. In his never-ending struggles as Dusty, sadly, incapable of charm, dread parent, he drives brad’s dust to dust.Like the last time I visited my family, there were more heated, absurd attempts to win the family. This caused the silly sequence of events. Underneath the absurd, however, remains the delicate theme of family love, acceptance, and growth. Both Brad and Dusty appreciate, however, that the children need both Brad’s support and Dusty’s adventurous spirit.

Like I said before, the film proves the point of working together for the sake of the kids. One doesn’t need to be perfect to take up the father role. One only needs to be present and willing to learn. For the sake of the kids, the men learn to co parent and the family bond. Both men learn how to support each other.
